The second volume of George Edwards' A Natural History of Uncommon Birds, published in 1747, featured an illustration and description of the African penguin. He referred to them as "The Black-Footed Penguins". Two preserved specimens that had been brought to London served as the inspiration for Edwards' hand-colored etching. He had a hunch they had been gathered close to the Cape of Good Hope.
